Total Duration: 3 hours
In Total of 65 questions 10 questions are from General Aptitude -GA with total of 15 marks whilst remaining 55 questions are from technical side with total of 85 marks.

Common types of questions are:

  • Multiple choice questions
  • Common data questions
  • Linked answer questions
  • Numerical answer questions
  1. Multiple choice questions: Each question carries 1 or 2 marks. There are four options but one of them is correct.
  2. Common data questions (also multiple choice questions) in common data questions 2 or 3 questions will carry 2 marks each and both questions use the same data set.
  3. Linked answer questions (also multiple choice questions), in common data questions 2 or 3 questions will carry 2 marks each and second question is based on the answer provided in the first question.
  4. Numerical answer questions, the answer is entered with the help of mouse and a virtual keyboard appeared on the screen.
Note : Sectional cut-off  ( Technical / Non-Technical like Engineering mathematics & General Aptitude ) are not applied in GATE exam.
In all the papers, there will be a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks, out of which 10 questions carrying 15 marks in General Aptitude (GA) are compulsory.

NOTE: General Aptitude (GA-15 Marks) is common for all the engineering branch ( Civil-CE, Computer Science-CS, Information technology-IT, CE, Mech, EE, ECE, IN. Question of General Aptitude will remain same for branches held in same seating.

Q.1 to Q.25: Will carry one mark each (sub-total 25 marks). 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
Q.26 to Q.55: Will carry two marks each (sub-total 60 marks) 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
Q.48 through Q.51 (2 pairs) will be common data questions. Each question will carry two marks 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
Question pairs (Q.52, Q.53) and (Q.54, Q.55) will be linked answer questions.
The answer to the second question of the last two pairs will depend on the answer to the first question of the pair.If the first question in the linked pair is wrongly answered or is un-attempted, then the answer to the second question in the pair will not be evaluated. Each question will carry two marks
There will be negative marks only for wrong answer to the first question of the linked answer question pair i.e. for Q.52 and Q.54, 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. There is no negative marking for Q.53 and Q.55.
Q.56 to Q.60 : From General Aptitude (GA) will carry one mark each (sub-total 5 marks). 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
Q.61 to Q.65 : From GA will carry two marks each (sub-total 10 marks) 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
All the papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI and TF will contain few questions on Engineering Mathematics carrying 15 marks.


Marking scheme: Negative marking of 1/3rd for One marks question and Negative marking of 2/3rd for Two marks question.

Unattempted question: No Marks
